to sleep, perchance with your shoes

Tuesday, September 9, 2014

My dad once described himself this way:  "I never want to go to bed, and then I don't ever want to get up in the morning."

I am The Same Way.  I don't want to miss the party and I have never cared about being the early bird.

It's apparently hereditary.

Jack seems to have inherited it.  While I realize that no four year old wants to go to bed, Jack is no exception.  And while he deigns to enjoy the routine of bath time and story time, he pulls out all the stops after story time to avoid actual sleeping time.

Mom, I'm FURSTY.
Mom, I have to go potty.
Mom, I need to tell you something.
Dad, I need to give you a hug.
Dad, I heard something.
Hey guys, I'm HUNGRY.

Medieval sort that we are, we've acquiesced to one slice of cold bread and a bit of water if he insists that he will waste away from lack of sustenance while waiting for breakfast.  If we have the heel of the loaf, that's what I'm giving him.

(Hey man, if you're hungry, a heel of wheat bread will do the trick.  But, I digress.)

I also realize, in this rubric of sleep, that nap time is about to end for Jack.  This thought fills me with sadness and fear.

These recent pictures from school do my heart a world of good.  Napping is still happening, and for each day that is true, I am glad.

Incidentally, a rogue shoe in the bed or blanket overhead is never one of Jack's avoidance tactics.

Now I know why.

Hope you exhibit some charmingly hereditary traits today.

...and party every day.

Sawyer is a whopping four and a half months old.  Crap.  On the 13th, he will be five months old.  How did that happen?

He is now adept at rolling over.  He also weighs 15 pounds.  The combination of these facts means that we are DONE with swaddling.  Done.

I will miss you, Miracle Blanket.

Despite the fact that I love sleeping on my stomach (and heartily missed it during both of my pregnancies), Sawyer is not currently so inclined.  He also seems to think that night time should be an all you can eat buffet. I disagree.

We are crying it out, people.

It's very serious.

Hope you can stare down someone with your best intentions in mind today.

to sleep or not to sleep

Sleep is so awesome.

From what I remember.

OK, that's not entirely fair.  Sawyer is sleeping pretty well.  He's doing extremely well when you consider that he was a preemie.  And Durel takes a night feeding every night, because he's awesome like that.

Regardless, being woken by a screaming imp at 3 AM totally stinks.  No matter how cute the imp is.  No matter how good the coffee tastes.  No matter how much you like the quiet stillness of the morning when it's just you and your vanilla-scented baby.

Sawyer is perplexed by my deep desire to sleep during the nighttime hours, uninterrupted.

You want me to sleep through the night?
Mother.  I'm doing the best I can here.
Eat, sleep, poop, smile, repeat.  It's a lot to remember.
However, he is open to discussion on the topic.  He attempts to sway me with his amazing cuteness.

I'm cute, right?  Doesn't that help?
Like, so cute that 3 AM is totally fine?
Ultimately, we reach a BATNA.  I cannot accept less than this, but I can work with this.

I know, I know.  I'll work on it.
And yes, I am so awesome.
Hope you get to yes today.

Talk soon,
Heather

The 411 on Jack at 5 1/2 Months

Wednesday, August 18, 2010

It seems like time to give a bit of an update on Jack.  I can't quite believe it, but he's 5 1/2 months old.  He's our favorite "Little Dude" -- and we are having so much fun watching him grow and change every day!

Here's the 411 on Jack right now:

Favorite things:  Sophie the giraffe, his toes, bathtime.

Favorite food:  Seems to be sweet potatoes.  (Just like his mom!)  He's still a big fan of the thumb, as well.

Favorite songs:  He likes most music, but he especially likes it when his dad makes up songs!

Hair?  Nope.

Sleeping:  Like a champ.  Like both of his parents.

Favorite people:  Other than his parents, Jack is a big, huge fan of his teachers, Miss Maria and Miss Kisha, as well as his BFF, Gabe, and his girlfriend, Linley.

New things he does:  Jack is a big fan of playing with his toes.

Teeth?  Seem to be on the way.  He chew on Sophie like crazy, and drools like a little, drooly monster.

Dogs?  Loves them.  He particularly likes petting Lucy and grabbing her tongue when she licks him.

Parents?  Couldn't be happier.

Independence Day 2010:  Eating, sleeping, relaxing.  Independence is awesome.  So are naps.

And, well, so are sunglasses.

Hope you all enjoyed the same way we did.

Counting Sheep, and Hours of Sleep

Thursday, May 6, 2010

Jack is down to one middle of the night feeding these days.  It's pretty consistently at 2 AM.  This means that both Jack and I are sleeping pretty well through the night.

Also, as witnessed above, sometimes fits of excessive cuteness result in impromptu napping in the bouncy chair.

Regardless, sleep is good.

Hope this finds you well,
Heather

Six Weeks Old!

Friday, April 16, 2010

Yesterday was Jack's six week birthday!  I swore to myself I wouldn't be one of those moms who measures everything in weeks.  This is because, prior to having a child, I was perpetually dividing my friends' answers  by four to figure out the "real" answer in months. (How old is he?  Sixteen weeks.  Pause.  Oh!  Four months!)

However, six weeks is quite the milestone for Jack and his doting parents.  He rewarded us for our tenacity with gas drops, reflux, and millions of poopy diapers by sleeping for a record-breaking five hours straight the other night.  We are joyful.  I am not being facetious.  This is big stuff.

Jack agrees:

Happy Friday to everyone!
